The Apples of Sauk County

May 9 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Sauk County is home to a number of early, important apple growers and nurserymen. They made significant contributions to the apple varieties our ancestors grew that we are rediscovering today. This talk is about them and the search for the lost varieties they grew. A field trip will follow on Saturday, May 20. More details will be available at the lecture. This event is sponsored by the Rooted in Conservation Fund through the Community Foundation of South Central Wisconsin.

Dan Bussey, our lecturer, is a lifelong apple grower, cider maker and apple historian and author of the “Illustrated History of Apples in the United States and Canada.” He is the former orchard manager of the Seed Saver’s Exchange of Decorah, Iowa and the current orchard manager at Silverwood County Park, Edgerton, a community orchard with over 600 varieties and many are Wisconsin heirloom varieties.
